AMCHAM Chairman, James Kim Leads Exclusive Fireside Chat with Korean Presidential Candidate Yoon Suk YeolTo explore measures to further promote trade between the U.S. and Korea and create a global business environment to position Korea as a Regional Headquarters of Asia December 28, 2021 – This afternoon, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a special meeting with Yoon Suk Yeol, Presidential Candidate for People Power Party, at the Conrad Hotel Seoul. At this event, Mr. Yoon met with a delegation of U.S. companies in Korea to discuss his future policies as the next presidential candidate as well as his vision for creating a global investment environment to enhance South Korea's competitiveness and boosting trade between the U.S. and South Korea. AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “We hope that Mr. Yoon will play an important role in promoting foreign direct investment and establishing policies to make Korea the headquarters of many companies in Asia. Active support from the Korean government is needed in areas such as labor, taxation, and regulatory environment. It is an honor to discuss ways to further accelerate economic growth across Korea.” Presidential candidate Yoon Suk Yeol said, “The Korea-U.S. alliance is a key pillar of the global economy and security. There are still unstable factors such as the spread of the COVID- 19 Omicron mutations and supply chain disturbances, but we must cooperate to turn these crises into opportunities. We believe that the two countries can be reborn as partners to strengthen cooperation in high-tech industries such as nuclear power plants, AI, bio, semiconductors, and next-generation batteries," he said. He added, "In order to attract active investment from companies, it is important to remove uncertainties related to government policies to ensure stability in the decision-making process. We will do our best to improve unreasonable regulations that hinder market efficiency." In the Fireside Chat, with AMCHAM Chairman & CEO Kim, Mr. Yoon emphasized the importance of foreign investment and the need to create a fair corporate environment that meets global standards. He pledged to actively create a global investment environment where creativity, efficiency, innovation, and entrepreneurship are respected, while also seeking to strengthen R&D cooperation by utilizing Korea's excellent ICT environment, infrastructure, and human resources. I believe many Korean businesses will be able to discover growth opportunities and accomplish amazing things in the U.S. going forward.” “Helping Korean businesses realize their aspirations and achieve success in the U.S. is one of AMCHAM’s key missions.” he added. “All of the participants here today are the future of our economic partnership, and your participation will strengthen the two countries.” Hakhee Jo, Vice President for International Affairs of KITA, said, “Given the socially distanced economy caused by COVID-19 and President Joe Biden Administration's eco-friendly policies, Korean companies will continue to have opportunities to enter this field.” He added, “Despite ongoing uncertainties, we will continue to strive to share information that helps Korean companies enter the U.S. market.” Andrew Herrup, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy Seoul, also delivered congratulatory remarks, saying, “Whether you are with a large company, a supplier, or an SME, expanding into the United States makes good business sense.” The first session featured a presentation on “Outlook on the U.S. Economy and Financial Situation in 2022 – Post-COVID-19.” David Mericle, Chief U.S. Economist from Goldman Sachs, said, “The U.S. economy is expected to maintain modest economic recovery in 2022, but economic uncertainties such as the spread of the Omicron COVID-19 mutation, supply chain disruptions, and inflation are also expected to continue.” He added, “In particular, the U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to reduce asset purchases and raise interest rates about three times to cope with inflationary pressure.” In the following special lecture, Chang Jin Hong, Director of Investment Division at Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Government, explained Jeju's investment environment, foreign company support system, and Jeju's new growth industry. In April 2021, Mr. Lee hosted select members of the AMCHAM Board of Governors as Governor of Gyeonggi Province to discuss increasing foreign investment in Gyeonggi. ### 주한미국상공회의소, 이재명 대선 후보 초청 특별 간담회 개최 주한 美 기업 지방 유치, 직접 투자 확대 및 일자리 창출 방안 모색 2021년 12월 02일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 오늘 오후 이재명 더불어민주당 대통령 후보를 초청하여 특별 간담회를 개최하였다. 본 간담회에는 암참 이사진과 주한 미국 기업 대표단을 포함한 14인이 참석하였으며, 참여 기업은 한국쓰리엠, 어플라이드머티어리얼즈코리아, 에이스손해보험(Chubb), 한국필립모리스, 퀄컴코리아, GE 코리아, 한국화이자제약, 한국MSD, 한국지엠, MGE 인터내셔널, 델타항공 및 싸이티바 등이다. 콘래드 서울 호텔에서 비공개로 진행된 이번 간담회에서 이 후보는 주한 미국 기업 대표단과 함께 차기 대선 후보로서의 정책·미래비전과 미국 기업들의 투자처라는 관점에서 대한민국의 경쟁력 제고, 지역 균형 발전을 위한 일자리 창출 방안 등 경제 성장을 중점으로 이야기를 이어나갔다. 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 간담회에 앞선 환영사를 통해, "외국인 직접투자 증진과 대한민국을 많은 기업들의 아시아 지역본부로 만들기 위한 정책 수립에 있어 이 후보께서 중요한 역할을 해 주실 것을 기대한다. 반도체 등 전략분야의 외국인 투자 유치 경쟁이 극심한 가운데, 연구개발(R&D) 관련 투자 유치에 성공하기 위해서는 한국 정부의 적극적인 지원이 필요하며 바로 지금이 적기라고 판단된다.” 라고 말했다. 또한 “암참은 비정치적이고 초당적인 조직이며, 오늘의 대화를 통해 대한민국 전역에 걸친 경제 성장을 더욱 가속화할 수 있는 방안에 대한 논의를 나눌 수 있어 영광이다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 이재명 후보는 모두발언을 통해, “우리 대한민국 경제와 미국 경제는 매우 긴밀한 협력 관계에 있고, 앞으로 협력해 나아가야 할 부분 또한 무궁무진 하다는 생각이 든다. 최근, 글로벌 공급망이 많은 변화를 겪으면서 앞으로의 한미 간 경제 협력이 더욱 중요해질 것이다.” 라고 말하며, “경제화 효율을 제공하는 규제는 강화하되, 경제적 효율을 괴롭히는 규제는 철저하게 완화하겠다.” 라고 밝혔다. 그는 또한 이어, “대한민국 정부 입장에서는, 그리고 대한민국 국민의 입장에서는, 미국을 포함한 외국 투자가 매우 중요하다. 고용도 늘려가고, 국내 소득도 늘어나는 매우 바람직한 일이기 때문에, 여러가지 방식들을 동원해서 국내 투자가 원만하게 이루어질 수 있도록 방법을 찾아가겠다.” 라고 말했다. 한편 암참과 이재명 후보와의 만남은 이번이 두 번째로, 지난 4월 이 후보는 경기도지사 자격으로 암참 이사진을 초청하여 외국인 투자 확대를 논의한 바 있다.

AMCHAM Invites CEOs of Multinational Companies to Engage in Dialogue on Enhancing Global Competitiveness of Korean Youth -AMCHAM Holds “Innovation Camp” for Participants of Seoul Metropolitan Government Internship Program- November 30, 2021 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) holds a virtual Innovation Camp program this afternoon for about 67 participants who have completed a three-month internship as part of the AMCHAM - Seoul Metropolitan Government Internship Program, which includes 21 AMCHAM member companies. The Innovation Camp, which began with a greeting from Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, invited five of the AMCHAM members who participated in the Internship Program (Coca-Cola, GM Korea, McDonald’s Korea, PERSOLKELLY, and Qualcomm) to share each company’s latest updates, talent, and internship experiences. The event featured special lectures from each company’s CEO and presentations about the internship.
