Korean Air partners with CEVA Logistics for sustainable fuel use in cargo transportation

By Park Jae-hyuk, The Korea Times - Korean Air recently signed a partnership agreement with France’s CEVA Logistics to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for its cargo transportation business, the air carrier said Thursday. SAF is an alternative fuel made from non-petroleum feedstocks that reduce emissions in the air transportation industry.

The signing ceremony took place at Air Cargo China Conference 2024 in Shanghai, June 26.

Eum Jae-dong, senior vice president and head of cargo business at Korean Air, and Olivier Boccara, air & ocean division leader at CEVA’s Asia-Pacific operation, participated in the ceremony along with senior executives of both companies.

Under the agreement, CEVA will support Korean Air’s usage of SAF in its air cargo operations. The Korean airline will share the result of its reduction in carbon emissions with the French logistics firm. Both companies also plan to promote their usage of SAF and raise awareness about reducing carbon emissions in the logistics sector.

“We are pleased with the strong support from businesses and cargo customers for our SAF program,” Eum said. “We will continue to build partnerships that enable our customers to actively and directly contribute to decarbonization efforts.”

Boccara emphasized that one of CEVA’s key short-term levers to promote decarbonization hinges on collaboration.

“Through developing new solutions for our customers with airline partners like Korean Air, we are able to contribute to meaningful change in our industry,” the French firm’s executive said. “Extending our SAF offering into the Asian market is a tangible step we can take now as we look ahead to more advances in fuels and other technologies to decarbonize air freight and the global supply chain.”

Since September 2023, Korean Air has run a Customer-participation SAF program to engage industry partners in supporting sustainable practices. The air carrier signed partnerships with Korea’s LX Pantos last November and Japan’s Yusen Logistics in January this year for the usage of SAF in its air cargo operations.

In February 2022, Korean Air became the first Korean flag carrier to use SAF, with its implementation on its scheduled Paris-Seoul Incheon route. The airline also signed a memorandum of understanding with Shell in September 2022 to purchase SAF at major airports in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East from 2026 to 2031.
