Hyundai Motor Group, SNU open battery research center to secure global EV leadership   By Lee Kyung-min, The Korea Times - Hyundai Motor Group announced the establishment of a Joint Battery Research Center set up jointly with Seoul National University (SNU), Tuesday. This collaborative effort between the local automotive titan and SNU aims to advance battery technologies and foster industry-academia cooperation to establish global leadership in the battery sector. The opening ceremony for the center took place at SNU's main campus and was attended by esteemed guests, including Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun. "Our mission to develop a diverse range of mobility solutions equipped with advanced batteries is driven by our strong commitment to a sustainable environment for future generations," he said. "Through pioneering joint research and development efforts, we hope to empower all researchers to lead the way in propelling the transition to electrification of the mobility industry." SNU President Ryu Hong-lim also gave a congratulatory speech at the event. "The Joint Battery Research Center will be the starting point for battery technology with improved performance and robust safety in line with Hyundai Motor Group's preemptive innovation in the field of electrification," he said. "We expect that the best faculty and graduate students will create synergy with Hyundai Motor Group's competent researchers, laying the groundwork for various innovations ranging from the basics of batteries to applications." The center began to take shape in November 2021, when the automotive group and SNU signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the establishment of a joint battery research center and medium- to long-term joint research based on the consensus of realizing carbon neutrality and creating a battery research platform. To foster close research cooperation, the new facility will secure a dedicated space for battery-only research within SNU's expanded Institute of Chemical Processes, spanning three floors. It will consist of seven laboratories and conference rooms for battery development, analysis, measurement and processes. This is the first research facility specializing in electric vehicle (EV) batteries to be established within the university. With the opening of the center, Hyundai Motor will work with the nation's top battery experts to lay the groundwork for research and development of battery-related technologies. The center aims to focus on advanced research into leading next-generation battery technologies that can dramatically increase EV driving distance and shorten charging time, as well as research on battery condition monitoring technology and innovative process technology. A total of 22 joint research projects will be carried out in four divisions, including lithium metal batteries, solid-state batteries, battery management systems (BMS) and battery process technology.  A total of 21 professors and master's and doctorate-level experts from local universities will participate in the research.Source: https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/tech/2023/07/419_355671.html

GE, 항공 붐 타고 깜짝 실적…하반기도 고공비행    아시아경제 조유진 기자 - 미국 제너럴일렉트릭(GE)이 항공 사업 호황으로 올 2분기 시장 예상을 뛰어넘는 깜짝 실적을 내놨다. 매출과 순이익 모두 두 자릿수 성장세를 기록했다는 소식에 주가가 6% 이상 오르는 등 시장은 환호했다. 25일(현지시간) GE IR자료 등에 따르면 GE는 올 2분기 주당 순이익이 0.68달러로 전년 동기 대비 89% 증가했다고 밝혔다. 이는 시장 예상치(0.46달러)를 웃돈 것이다. 같은 기간 매출액도 전년 동기 대비 19% 증가한 159억달러를 기록하며, 시장 예상(147억6000만달러)을 상회했다. 항공·에너지·헬스케어 등 전 부문에서 고른 수요 증가가 2분기 호실적을 이끈 요인으로 꼽힌다. GE는 2분기 주문량이 항공사업 부문에서 전년 동기 대비 37% 급증했고, 에너지와 헬스케어 사업 등 전 부문에서도 고른 주문량 증가를 보였다. 로런스 컬프 주니어 GE 최고경영자(CEO)는 "금리 상승과 경기침체 등 비우호적인 시장환경에도 (보잉, 에어버스 등 고객사의) 수요가 줄지 않고 있다"고 밝혔다. 그는 "지난해 업계를 강타한 공급망 이슈가 차차 해소되고 있지만, 생산량 증가를 따라잡기 위해 더 큰 노력을 기울일 것"이라고 말했다. GE는 하반기에도 호실적을 이어갈 것이라며 올해 연간 실적 목표치를 올려 잡았다. LG Energy Solution Secures ‘Cobalt Sulfate’ in Canada  By Jasmine Choi, BusinessKorea - LG Energy Solution has successfully secured a large amount of cobalt sulfate, a key ingredient for electric vehicle batteries, in Canada. Electra Battery Materials, a Canadian mining company, announced on July 24, local time, that it had signed a long-term supply agreement for cobalt sulfate with LG Energy Solution. As a result of the agreement, LG Energy Solution will be supplied with 19,000 tons of cobalt sulfate over a five-year period from 2025 to 2029. Last September, the two companies had already agreed to supply 7,000 tons of cobalt sulfate over three years starting this year. This recent deal marks a significant expansion in terms of both supply period and volume. Electra is the only cobalt sulfate refiner in North America, planning to produce cobalt sulfate at a refinery under construction in Ontario, Canada. LG Energy Solution has now secured a stable supply of key minerals that meet the conditions of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) incentive for its North American factories. Posco Holdings' Q2 profit beats expectations on steelmaking recovery    BY SARAH CHEA, Korea JoongAng Daily - Posco Holdings reported a consensus-beating 1.3 trillion won ($1 billion) in consolidated operating profit in the second quarter as the steelmaking business slowly recovers after the shutdown of Posco's Pohang steel mill last year.   The quarterly operating profit came in at 1.33 trillion won, down 38.1 percent on year, beating market expectations of 1.2 trillion won compiled by market tracker FnGuide.   On quarter, the operating profit is up by 86 percent as it resumed full operations at its Pohang factory on Jan. 20, exactly 135 days after it was shut down on Sept. 7 due to flooding caused by Typhoon Hinnamnor.   Revenues fell 12.6 percent on year to 20.1 trillion won during the same period, in line with analyst expectations of 20.7 trillion won.   Net profit was also in line with the consensus of 800 billion won, down 55.6 percent on year.   The consolidated earnings include those of its subsidiaries, which include steelmaker Posco, Posco Future M and Posco International.   "The typhoon-hit steelmaker Posco recovered the 1 trillion won level as sales normalized starting in the second quarter," Jeong Ki-seop, chief strategy officer at Posco Holdings, said during a conference call Monday morning. "The recovery of our key business is very significant."   Posco generated 841 billion won in operating profit during the April-to-June period, down 36.4 percent on year. On quarter, it is up by 235 percent.   Non-steelmaking subsidiaries also reported strong results in the second quarter.   Posco Future M generated 52.1 billion won in operating profit, down 5.6 percent on year due to increased expenses on the newly opened cathode factory in Gwangyang, South Jeolla.   Sales recorded an all-time high of 1.2 trillion won, up 48.5 percent on year.    Operating profit of battery material businesses skyrocketed 124.6 percent on year to 37.5 billion won during the same period. Sales of cathodes grew 10.4 percent to 786.3 billion won. Cathodes are the major materials in making EV batteries that make up 40 percent of the total battery cost.   Posco Future M won orders of 106 trillion won so far from various major battery makers including Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solution and Ultium Cells.   "Posco Holdings will pour 46 percent of our total investments into the secondary battery business over the next three years," said Jeong. "Profitability will kick into high gear starting in 2026."   Posco Future M aims to increase its cathode production capacity to 1 million tons and anode to 360,000 tons by 2030.    Posco International, a trading company, generated an all-time high of 357.2 billion won in operating profit, up 28 percent on year. SOS, SOS …'광산안전DX' 솔루션으로 인부 생명 지킨다 매일경제 김대은 기자 - 지난 11일 강원도 영월군 상동광산 깊숙한 곳. 빛 한 점조차 들지 않는 이곳 텅스텐 채굴장에서 광산 인부가 태블릿PC를 꺼내 알림 신호를 보냈다. 그러자 바깥에 있는 관제센터에 SOS 신호가 보내졌고, 즉시 대기 중인 구조대가 출동해 인부를 끌어냈다. 현장 관계자는 "태블릿PC를 일일이 꺼내지 않더라도 안전모의 버튼을 눌러 SOS 신호를 보낼 수 있다"며 "안전모 버튼을 직접 누르지 않아도 착용자가 오랜 시간 움직임이 없거나 심박 수에 이상이 생기면 역시 SOS 신호가 보내진다"고 설명했다.  휴대전화 통신이 불가능한 상동광산에서 이 같은 일이 가능한 것은 KT와 알몬티대한중석이 공동 개발한 '광산안전DX' 솔루션 덕분이다. 통상 무선 신호가 닿지 않는 광산 내부에 LTE 케이블과 블루투스 비콘을 설치해 내외부 간 소통이 가능하도록 만든 게 골자다. 총 10억원가량을 투자해 지난해 12월부터 개발을 시작했으며, 오는 9월 중으로 솔루션 개발이 마무리될 예정이다. 1993년 폐광됐으나 이후 2015년 알몬티의 인수로 재개발이 시작된 상동광산에 국내 최초로 적용됐다. 알몬티가 이곳 상동광산에 지금까지 투자한 금액은 1500억원이 넘는다.  광산안전DX 솔루션은 크게 △스마트기기 △출입·위치 관리 △인공지능(AI) 기반 안전시스템 △작업장 환경 모니터링 4가지 요소로 구성됐다.  스마트기기는 광산 내부의 작업자가 착용하는 각종 기기를 뜻한다. 손목에 착용하는 스마트밴드 외에도 스마트태그가 장착된 안전모, 스마트폰 등으로 구성돼 있다. 스마트밴드는 지속적으로 작업자의 위치 정보와 심박 수 등 생체 정보를 모니터링해 관제센터로 전송한다. 만약 착용자가 오랜 시간 움직임이 없거나 심박 등에 이상이 생기면 자동으로 알림이 발송되는 기능을 갖췄다. 이외에도 긴급 상황이 발생했을 때 안전모에 부착된 스마트태그의 버튼을 누르면 관제센터로 SOS 신호를 보낼 수 있다. 반대로 긴급 상황 발생 시 스마트폰으로 위험 경보를 받을 수도 있다.  출입·위치 관리는 작업자 및 차량 입·출입 확인 외에도 작업자의 실시간 위치, 위치별 작업 사항 확인, 작업자의 위험 지역 진입, 차량 접근 알림 등의 기능을 지녔다. 광산 내에서 정밀한 위치 정보를 측정하기 위해 곳곳에 저전력 블루투스 비콘을 설치했다. 상술한 스마트기기가 주변의 비콘과 신호를 주고받으면서 각 비콘에서 오는 신호 강도를 이용해 거리를 계산하고 작업자의 정확한 위치를 파악하는 식이다.  AI 기반 안전시스템은 관제센터에서 현장과 작업자들의 안전을 실시간으로 모니터링하는 것이다. 관리자는 작업자의 심박 수, 넘어짐 등을 실시간 관제하고 요주의자에 대한 휴식 등 선제적인 안전 조치를 시행할 수 있다. 비상 상황 발생 시 작업자들에게 비상 메시지를 전송하고 탈출로와 피난처를 안내한다. 또한 작업자 건강 상태, 갱도 내 위치 정보 등 축적된 데이터를 AI 기반으로 분석·학습해 광산 안전 관리 개선을 위해 활용한다.  작업장 환경 모니터링은 갱도 내 배치된 다양한 측정기로 여러 환경 요소를 실시간 감시하고 위험 수치에 도달 시 작업자와 관제센터에 경고 알림을 발송한다. 유해가스 측정기는 산화질소·이산화질소·일산화탄소·이산화탄소·아산화항 등 5종의 공기 중 농도를 측정한다. 이외에도 각종 측정기가 온습도, 주요 장소의 수위·진동 등을 파악해 위험 여부를 모니터링한다.  KT와 알몬티는 이와 같은 솔루션을 도입하기 위해 광산 내부에 누설동축케이블을 설치했다. 통상 건물 지하나 터널 등에 설치하는 이 케이블은 LTE 신호를 외부로 방사하는 기능을 지녔다. 통신 인프라스트럭처는 설치 장소가 어디인지에 따라 구축 난이도 차이가 큰데, 광산은 특히 내부 굴곡이 심하고 전파 송수신을 방해하는 지형지물이 많아 통신 장비를 적절히 배치하기 어렵기 때문이다.  지속적인 채굴로 갱도 구조와 작업장 위치가 계속 변한다는 것도 광산 내부에 통신 장비 설치를 어렵게 만드는 점이다. 이에 KT와 알몬티는 발파 작업이 진행 중인 곳에는 누설동축케이블 대신 지향성 안테나와 라인앰프를 설치했다. 누설동축케이블에서 주고받는 전파가 손실될 경우를 대비해 손실된 전파를 증폭해 통신 품질을 안정화하는 라인앰프를 설치한 것이다.  이렇게 광산 안에 만들어진 통신망은 추후 도입될 채굴 장비 원격제어와 차량 자율주행 시스템 운영에도 활용될 계획이다. 강동훈 알몬티 이사는 "광산에서는 하루만 사고가 나도 막대한 손실로 이어진다"며 "솔루션 개발을 통해 취득한 안전 관련 특허는 공익을 위해 모두 공개할 예정"이라고 말했다.출처: https://www.mk.co.kr/news/it/10792055

Samsung SDI, Stellantis to build second joint EV battery plant in U.S.By Byun Hye-jin, The Korea Herald - Samsung SDI said Monday it is poised to build a second electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant with Stellantis in the US, ramping up its investment in the all-important EV market. The two signed a memorandum of understanding to set up the plant under StarPlus Energy, a joint venture of Samsung SDI and Stellantis, with an initial annual production capacity of 34 gigawatt hours. It is slated to start production in 2027. The location of the plant has yet to be decided. The Korean battery maker’s first US production base and the first joint battery plant with Stellantis in Kokomo, Indiana, is expected to have an annual production of 33 GWh, up from the initial target of 23 GWh. Its commercial operation is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2025. The two plants’ combined production capacity comes to a total of 67 GWh. “After setting up a joint venture with Stellantis last year, we laid a solid foundation for expanding our presence in the North American EV market,” said Samsung SDI President and CEO Choi Yoon-ho. “The second plant will bolster our US business and help Stellantis drive the US’ EV transition by supplying (battery) products with the highest level of safety and the best quality.” The new production facility will be able to supply at least 25 new types of battery-powered EVs in North America by 2030, according to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, in a statement. Tavares also hinted that the two companies will further expand production in the US. In a move to make all of its sales in Europe for passenger cars electric models, and 50 percent of all sales a mixture of EVs and electrified light-duty trucks in the US by 2030, Stellantis is securing approximately 400 GWh of annual battery capacity worldwide. Samsung SDI is expected to take part in covering the production of roughly 16.7 percent. In April, the battery maker announced it has agreed to invest more than $3 billion in constructing an EV battery manufacturing plant with General Motors with a targeted annual production capacity of over 30 GWh. It was later unveiled that the plant will be constructed in Kokomo, Indiana. The plant is scheduled to be operational by 2026. Welcoming Samsung SDI’s investment in the US with GM, the Indiana government pledged to offer performance-based incentives through St. Joseph County, Indiana Michigan Power, the Northern Indiana Public Service Company and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. The two companies’ battery plant project is projected to set a record for the largest job commitment in 75 years, aiming to open up some 1,700 manufacturing jobs in St. Joseph County, Indiana, where the plant will be built. Samsung and Stellantis’ first EV battery plant is also expected to create some 1,400 new jobs in the city of Kokomo, Indiana. Source: http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20230724000572&np=1&mp=1

CJ Logistics’ North American Project Recognized as Catalyst of Korea-US Partnership  By Jasmine Choi, BusinessKorea - A 600 billion won investment into American logistics centers by CJ Logistics is being highlighted as a positive case of Korea-US partnership.According to CJ Logistics, Ellen Park, a New Jersey State Assemblywoman, mentioned on her Facebook page on July 17 (local time) that “CJ Logistics’ New Jersey infrastructure investment plan can strengthen the bond between the two countries and promote long-term regional economic growth.” CJ Logistics announced on June 28 that it, along with the Korea Maritime Promotion Corporation, would invest approximately 600 billion won in the U.S. to build three large-scale advanced logistics centers in New Jersey and Chicago. GM, 2023년 KSQI 국산자동차판매점·AS 부문 1위    아시아투데이 강태윤 기자 - 제너럴 모터스(GM)가 한국능률협회컨설팅(KMAC)이 주관하는 '2023 한국산업 서비스품질지수(KSQI)' 고객접점 부문 조사에서 '국산자동차판매점' 부문에서 11년 연속, 'AS' 부문에서 5년 연속 1위를 달성했다고 20일 밝혔다. KSQI는 고객 접점을 조사대상으로 하는 국내 유일의 제도로 올해는 총 36개 산업군에서 145개 기업·기관이 참여했다.
