TOPIC

“After a Year of Political Change in Northeast Asia: Prospects for Engaging North Korea in 2013”
?

?Dear AMCHAM Members,?

With the election of Madame Park the next five years will bring significant change to the landscape of Korea. While much of her campaign was focused on domestic economic policy, an important element of her campaign centered on building a better relationship with North Korea through building mutual trust, establishing an inter-Korea-Exchange-Cooperation office in Seoul and Pyongyang, build an economic community between the North and South, revitalize the six party talks and maintain a strong deterrent. There is no doubt about her sincerity or desire to keep these promises so with some minimal cooperation from the North, we may see improvement in the dialogue and relationship.

Gordon Flake, an expert on the North based in Washington, will be visiting Korea again and has agreed to make a presentation to our committee on the prospects of engaging North Korea in 2013. The meeting will be held on January 9, 2013, 8:00 am at the Grand Hyatt. We look forward to seeing you at our first meeting of 2013.

Best wishes for a very peaceful and healthy 2013. See you on January 9.

Best regards,

AMCHAM DPRK Committee Co-Chair
Jeffrey Jones
