Joy Yamamoto is the Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul.
She previously served as the Director of the Office of Economic Policy in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs and as the Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Manila.
She has worked on the State Department’s Indonesia, China, and Korea desks and in the Department’s Operations Center and has been posted to New Zealand, Trinidad, and Brazil.
Before joining the State Department, she worked for more than 10 years as a newspaper journalist.
She has master’s degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and Stanford University, and a bachelor’s degree from Whittier College.
