    David Gossack

David Gossack started his assignment as Senior Commercial Officer and Commercial Minister at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, Korea in September 2014.         

Prior to Korea, he served as Senior Commercial Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia from July 2011 to July 2014.  In his role in the world’s 4th most populous country comprising nearly half of ASEAN’s economic output, he led US business development and advocacy initiatives in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

 Mr. Gossack was a leader of U.S. commercial engagement in China for 7 years from 2003 to 2010.  From 2007 to 2010, he was Principal Commercial Officer at the US Consulate General in Shanghai where he led one of the Commerce Department’s largest overseas offices in support of American companies conducting business in East China and served on the Board of Governors of Asia’s largest American Chamber of Commerce.  He previously served as Commercial Attache at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing from 2003-2007, in Bangkok, Thailand from 1999-2002 and in Tokyo, Japan from 1995-1999.  Earlier in his career Mr. Gossack held several positions in the Department of State, including at the American Embassy in Tokyo from 1982 to 1985, and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Executive Office of the President. 

He is the recipient of numerous awards from the Department of Commerce, including its Gold Medal Award, that agency’s highest honorary award in recognition of professional achievement.  He has also received from DOC two Silver Medals, three Bronze Medals and two Director General Awards.

From 1987 to 1990, he served as Legislative Assistant and Counsel to U.S. Senator Spark Matsunaga of Hawaii, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee’s Subcommittee on International Trade.  Mr. Gossack was a key participant in the drafting of several pieces of major trade legislation in the Senate and also served as the Senator's representative on the U.S. National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation.  An attorney, Mr. Gossack subsequently practiced international trade and business law in a Washington, DC firm for several years. 

  Mr. Gossack is a graduate of Stanford University and the School of Law at the University of Washington and is a member of the Washington State Bar Association.  He is a native of San Jose, California.  In addition to Indonesian, his foreign languages are conversational Chinese, Japanese, French and Spanish.  He may be contacted at: david.gossack@trade.gov
